CCUSNA WA Hubs Workshop Webinar Series: Region Updates: Mid West Region (Nils Hay – Mid West Development Commission) – 19 January 2026

CCUSNA WA Hubs Workshop Webinar Series: Region Updates: Mid-West Region – Nils Hay (Mid West Development Commission)

In February 2026, CCUSNA will host an invitation‑only workshop, “What are the opportunities and challenges associated with developing a multi-user CCUS hub in WA (for Kwinana, Mid-West and the Pilbara regions)”

In the lead‑up to the workshop, CCUSNA is running a series of webinars for workshop participants, as well as for the broader community of CCUSNA members and subscribers.

These sessions will explore three key themes:

  • Setting the scene
  • A deeper dive into each region
  • Global examples of operational and developing hubs

In this third webinar of the series, we will take a deeper dive into the Mid-West Region.  Nils Hay from the Mid-West Development Commission will discuss existing infrastructure, current emissions challenges, potential for future emissions through the Future Made in Australia initiatives and growing industries.  A summary of storage and utilisation opportunities in the region will be provided, including local emissions sources, or through CO2 import from elsewhere.

This webinar will be held on Monday 19 January 2026 at 11am Perth time.

Speaker Biography:

Nils Hay is the Chief Executive Officer of the Mid West Development Commission. Based in Geraldton, Western Australia, he is passionate about regional development, and has spent the last decade working in senior State and Local Government roles in regional Australia.

With the Mid West region emerging as a key contributor to Australia’s energy transition, Nils’ work is increasingly focused on the intersection between the development of major projects, delivery of infrastructure, and impact on the regional communities that hold the resources underpinning this transition. In 2024 he completed a Churchill Fellowship focused on the impacts of large-scale renewable and low-carbon energy projects in regional communities and in 2025 Chaired the Technical Reference Group for GISERA’s Community wellbeing and attitudes to energy transition in the North Perth Basin project.
