CCUSNA WA Hubs Workshop Webinar Series: Setting the Scene: 2023 LNG Jobs Taskforce CCUS Hubs Study (Karsten Michael CSIRO) – 15 January 2026

CCUSNA WA Hubs Workshop Webinar Series: Setting the Scene: 2023 LNG Jobs Taskforce CCUS Hubs Study – Karsten Michael (CSIRO)

In February 2026, CCUSNA will host an invitation‑only workshop, “What are the opportunities and challenges associated with developing a multi-user CCUS hub in WA (for Kwinana, Mid-West and the Pilbara regions)”

In the lead‑up to the workshop, CCUSNA is running a series of webinars for workshop participants, as well as for the broader community of CCUSNA members and subscribers.

These sessions will explore three key themes:

  • Setting the scene
  • A deeper dive into each region
  • Global examples of operational and developing hubs

The second webinar of the series will look at Setting the Scene – 2023 LNG Jobs Taskforce CCUS Hubs Study.  Dr Karsten Michael from CSIRO will introduce the 2023 LNG Jobs Taskforce CCUS Hubs Study, and present the major findings from the study.

This webinar will be held on Thursday 15 January 2026 at 11am Perth time.

Speaker Biography:

Karsten Michael has MSc and PhD degrees in Hydrogeology from the Technical University Berlin and from the University of Alberta, respectively. Initially, he worked as a hydrogeologist at the Alberta Geological Survey/Alberta Energy and Utilities Board in Canada on the characterisation of acid-gas injection operations and basin-scale CO2 geological storage assessments before joining CSIRO in Perth in 2007. He currently is a Principal Research Scientist in the CSIRO Energy business unit. Karsten’s main interest is the modelling of basin-scale impacts of fluid production and injection on groundwater flow. In the past, he was a project leader for Understanding CO2 storage in Saline Aquifers in the CO2CRC and examples of his work include modelling the impacts of CO2 storage on groundwater in the Gippsland and Surat basins. More recently, he was the project leader of the CSIRO In-Situ Laboratory project that involved a controlled CO2 release experiment using one of the wells at the South West Hub CCS Flagship project in Western Australia. He was part of a team investigating the options for underground hydrogen storage in Australia, and he has also been the leader of a project assessing the role of CCUS hubs in Western Australia for the WA LNG Jobs Taskforce.
