CCUSNA WA Hubs Workshop Webinar Series: Region Updates: Pilbara Region – Michael Heap (Pilbara Development Commission)
In February 2026, CCUSNA will host an invitation‑only workshop, “What are the opportunities and challenges associated with developing a multi-user CCUS hub in WA (for Kwinana, Mid-West and the Pilbara regions)”
In the lead‑up to the workshop, CCUSNA is running a series of webinars for workshop participants, as well as for the broader community of CCUSNA members and subscribers.
These sessions will explore three key themes:
- Setting the scene
- A deeper dive into each region
- Global examples of operational and developing hubs
In this webinar, we will take a deeper dive into the Pilbara Region. Michael Heap from the Pilbara Development Commission will discuss the opportunities and challenges for a CCUS Hub in the Pilbara region. He will provide an overview of current industrial activities and infrastructure and discuss the potential for future GHG emissions that could benefit from access to a CCUS Hub in the Pilbara region.

Speaker Biography:
Michael Heap is the Acting CEO of the Pilbara Development Commission.
The Commission is a State Government statutory authority and is one of nine commissions established to facilitate economic and social development in their respective regions. The Commission works directly with the office of the Minister for Regional Development to advocate for and drive the priorities of the region.
Joining from the private sector in 2019 as the Commission’s Manager of Strategy, Michael now leads a team of staff, based in the Pilbara, who work to ensure the region grows a diverse and sustainable economy and see the region’s communities thrive.
Michael’s professional background is in research and analytics and he is an advocate for evidence-based decision making and the use of data to deliver impactful outcomes. He is passionate about contributing to the success of regional Western Australia, in particular the economic powerhouse of the Pilbara.
